South Summit Avenue: Ramsey to Lawton

University Club

University Club

420 Summit Avenue
Built: 1912 - 1913
Style: Tudor Revival

The University Club originated as the St. Paul Club, formed in 1904 by a group of male friends who wished to remain in touch with each other but who were leaving St. Paul to attend different colleges. The club first met at 102 Western Avenue. In February of 1902 the group voted to change its name to the University Club and introduce a requirement that members be attending some college when they join. The present site was choosen after the old club house was damaged by fire. The University Club is significant for its associations with F. Scott Fitzgerald and other Summit Hill Residents, and as a focal point of this stretch of Summit Avenue.
