North Summit Avenue: Kent to Dale

587-601 Summit Avenue; Built: 1889; Style: Richardsonian Romanesque; Summit Terrace / F. Scott Fitzgerald House -- The rowhouse was built for an estimated $48,000 and is the work of architects William Willcox and Clarence H. Johnston, Sr. In September of 1914, F. Scott Fitzgerald's parents moved into the 593 Summit unit of this rowhouse while Scott was a sophmore at Princeton. Scott spent time in his parents' house during breaks from school in 1914 and 1915. In September of 1918 Fitzgeralds parents moved into the unit at 599 Summit, where Scott joined them in July of 1919. While staying in the rowhouse F. Scott Fitzgerald reworte and polished his manuscript for his first published novel. "This Side of Paradise." Fitzgerld soon left St. Paul for the East Coast and eventually Hollywood and Europe but returned to St. Paul occasionally until 1922. His writing contains several references to Summit Avenue and to the city.
