Ohage House

Ohage House

59 Irvine Park
Built: 1889
Style: Queen Anne
Architect: Emil W. Ulrici
Dr. Jusus Ohage preformed America's first succusful gall bladder surgery at St. Joseph's Hospital in 1886.
Dr. Ohage was St. Paul's commissioner of public health from 1899 to 1907. He also mortgaged the house to purchase an island on the Mississippi River where he had public baths erected, out of concern for public hygiene. He donated the island and the baths to the city suggesting that it be named Harriet Island in honor of St. Paul's first educator, Harriet Bishop.
After the Ohage family left the home in 1947 the building was divided into rental units. A great-nephew of the Ohages, was chosen by the HRA to restore the house. They reconstructed the tower and porches and restored the interior.

Comment: (208.42.90.182) what did they use those little round rooms in the spheres for?

Comment: (128.255.203.118) Shot outs to Ian Dantuma, he lives in this house and you could say I live there too, seeing as how I spend so much time here and consume a lot of his food. Ruth, Dirk, take it easy see you soon. Nelly

Comment: (216.160.20.242) this was an apartment house in the 50's and 60's, it is next to Vandetties house on the corner.

Comment: the round rooms in this style house are most often not indivdual rooms but 'bump outs" in larger rooms. They make great reading areas.

Current rating: 1.50 : Excellent
